Our heritage

The Story of Driscoll

From ranch land and a railway station to the legacy of one of Texas's most remarkable families.

A town born of the railroad

Driscoll was established in 1888 when siblings Robert Driscoll Jr. and Clara Driscoll donated land from their family ranch. A post office followed in 1890. The town grew in 1904 when the St. Louis, Brownsville and Mexico Railway built south from Robstown and placed a station on Driscoll land.

Today the city sits at the junction of U.S. Highway 77 and Farm Road 665, roughly 22 miles southwest of Corpus Christi in Nueces County — a close-knit South Texas community of about 700 residents.

Robert Driscoll Jr.
1871 – 1929

A lawyer, banker, and rancher born near Victoria in 1871, Robert Driscoll Jr. championed the Port of Corpus Christi and managed a family estate spanning 125,000 acres. He served as president of the Corpus Christi National Bank and the Kingsville Producing and Milling Company, founded the towns of Bishop and Robstown, and was Port Chairman from 1926 until his death in 1929.

Clara Driscoll
Savior of the Alamo · d. 1945

Robert's sister Clara rescued the Alamo from demolition and served as Democratic National Committeewoman from Texas from 1922 to 1938. Upon her death in 1945 she established the Robert Driscoll and Julia Driscoll Foundation, and her will requested a fund to maintain a charitable hospital for children in need.

Driscoll Children's Hospital

Fulfilling Clara Driscoll's wishes, Driscoll Children's Hospital was established in 1953. It has since grown from a charity institution into a nonprofit serving children across all of South Texas.
